Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What is National Kite Month?
A:NKM is a month-long celebration of those things at the end of the strings. Kite events around the world will help introduce people to the fun of kiteflying, the rich history of kites, the stunning artistry of kitemakers, and how kites can be used as educational tools. NKM was co-founded by the Kite Trade Association International and the American Kitefliers Association.
Q:When is National Kite Month?
A:April is National Kite Month!
Q:Is there an NKM event near me?
A:Look on the Event Schedule page for a state-by-state listing of NKM events. You can also look at the American Kitefliers Association calendar for information on events throughout the year.
Q:I'd like to have a kite event, but I don't know how to run one. Where should I start?
A:If you want to plan a kite festival, the American Kitefliers Association's Kite Event Organizer's Manual is the place to start.
Q:I'm only running a small event. It's not really an NKM event, right?
A:Wrong! Any kite-related event can be an NKM event. Big festivals, small fun flies, kitemaking classes, classroom lectures, sport kite competitions, fighter kite battles, kite displays at Public Libraries or shopping malls, sewing workshops, Cub Scout kite workshops, all of these can be NKM events.
Q:What happens when I register my event?
A:Within a few days, your event will be posted on the NKM calendar. And you'll be entered into a drawing for some cool kite prizes.
Q:What do we do if everyone shows up except the wind?
A:Lack of wind does not have to mean the end of an event if adequately planned for. Have some low wind activities built into your event can ensure that the fun never stops. Some low cost, high fun examples include;
  • soap bubble blowing contests
  • yo-yo demonstrations tricks contest
  • water balloon tosses
  • juggling demonstrations/workshops
  • ground displays
  • coloring pages & puzzles to hand out (and crayons)
  • kite making workshops
  • indoor kite demonstrations
  • string untangling contests (all you need is some tangled string for each contestant or team)
  • provide some music to enjoy
  • origami paper plane folding/contests
Q:Where can I get a kite?
A:There are kitebuilding plans on this website for those who want to build their own. Click on "find a retailer" in the menu for a listing of Kite Trade Association members in your area.
Q:Are there any prizes who people who organize and register an event?
A:Of course!
Anyone who organizes and registers an event will be entered into weekly drawings.
Q:Can I link to your website?
A:Yes, as long as your site is NOT an adult web site. We appreciate all efforts to spread the word. We have some graphics for you to place on your page to link to our site. You can get one (or more) by viewing our link back page.
